Author's Note 

The most fascinating course I took in college was the History of Nazism and Fascism, taught by renowned historian Jackson J. Spielvogel. The short story, Ashes Ashes, emerged from the details I learned in that class.  The first version was published in the 2000 edition of the Penn State Student Literary Magazine, Kalliope.
